I have been planning to add a solar panel to my FJ for quite some time.

My goal was to rely on the power of the sun everyday to keep the FJ's battery charged. I run my fridge 24/7 and noticed during summer months after sitting for 8 hours voltage of 11.8-12.0. My commute is very short these days, so the solar panel should be just the ticket to keep the truck's battery topped off.

Grape Solar is located in Oregon, I was introduced to them through a Copper State Cruiser friend. When you call them, they answer the phone AND speak English!
A 100 watt panel was sourced as it will be more than enough for my needs.

The panel was $151.26 shipped.

The controller is a SunForce 10 amp unit, it was $39.21 shipped.

I fabricated my own mounts to fit my Baja Rack.

I used a Deck Seal (from the boating industry) to bring the wires into the cabin.

Wiring connections were made behind the rear driver side plastic panels.

I flush mounted the controller in the plastic as well.

Here are the finished photos...

How come you don't Mount it on the underside of the rack, saw wikids yesterday the same way. Renders your rack useless. Just asking, don't take it the wrong way, I'd like to have a set up myself!

Under the rack decreases efficiency tremendously.

I don't normally use the rack for anything.

I have a flat platform to haul stuff on the inside...

Freaking sweet Mark! Nice and clean. I really like the Deck Seal business. I would like to take a look at that in person. It might solve some of the problems I am going to have with a few planned mods.

The closest I ever came to adding solar was the panel Stream light makes. I think its only 15 watts but basically just sticks to the roof. Intended to offset phantom draw on police cruisers.

Now this has me thinking of upping the capacity a bit. Especially after some camping where I ran the stereo a lot, as well as ham gear.

Do you have to disconnect the panel before driving? I thought I read that you had to disconnect the panel from the battery before the alternator started charging the system.

Costco still has their 100 watt Grape Solar panel at $139.99 with free ship.

Negative, the system is completely transparent to the vehicle.

Home Depot has the same panel for the same price w/ free ship (to home).

1 week review.

I'm seeing battery voltage climb during the day with the fridge running while it's 105+ outside. My truck sits for 9 hours each day in the sun while at work.

End of day (battery) voltage has been ~12.7-13v each day since I installed the system.

I'm pretty happy overall. Wink

how big of a hole did you drill in your roof and do you have a measurement from side to side of those pucks and I was looking on getting those for my lights
