Im working on a friends computer that lost its internet connection. He has another computer that works fine on his router/modem and so did this one before this problem.I bought it home where I have three computers working on a network,so I disconnected one and copied its settings to this one.

1.I got the network working after manually entering in all the settings for the dlink adapter.

2.if i change back to automatically detect,it does not work.

3.found a trojan tring to be loaded, cleaned that

4.ran windows update.

5.still have my concerns regarding cmos battery as date and time need to be reset after computer is off for awhile.

any ideas??????

Battery shouldn't matter if the computer is off but still connected to power. Although, replacing the battery is about $1.29 so replacing it isn't a bad idea if the computer is several years old.
I would try a new network card with a different chipset from the one that isn't working. My home server kept having issues with the network drivers (would work for 6 months then no connection). I put in a new network card and so far so good.
Depending on what is on the computer... Blast it with DBAN and start from scratch. It will run faster, you can make sure everything has the correct drivers and you will know that any virus/trojan/malware issues are gone.

Updating/reloading the network card drivers, replacing that CMOS battery, and scanning for viruses using a second piece of software would be a good place to start. If you have a second network card you could try using that instead too.
Like Microbe said starting from scratch ensures everything is working fine..at least software wise. If there is still a problem after reloading Windows it might be hardware such as the network card. One good way to test whether it is hardware or software is to boot the computer using an operating system on a CD or floppy such as www.ubcd4win.com/. If everything works fine after booting from the cd then it is likely a software problem.

There have been a few trojans around that require a full install to correct.
They have the trait of "offering" online software to "stop malicious software".
And end up in endless popups and warnings.

The recent security pro trojan that has hit....has caused me a real pain took 4 hours to get it out of my wife's computer. The longer that it is in the harder it is to clear. If he uses IE it will have to be set back to the original settings. It may have hit his date and time settings as well.

I feel sorry for people with only one computer....the new trojans knock out the internet connection first, so that you can not look up / or download the fix.

Try using the System File Checker. It's installed by default can almost always corrects problems like these. Assuming that you're completely cleared the trojan/virus/worm up.

Read about it here www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html. It has certainly saved the bacon of many of the machines that I've worked on in the past.

Just an update. My friends computer was worked on by a person that sets up corporate networks and could not make an internet connection.Installed a new OS and everything works fine.I still believe the failed Windows Update screwed up the program.Cant prove it but think I an right.

We ran a lot of Windows servers where I work and I cannot tell you the number of times an update completely hosed the operating system over on them.

We test the updates before deploying them to the live servers, but periodically, something will slip by.

I would agree that it was probably a failed windows update.

It probably either half-way installed and hung or the update didnt support the NIC.

Glad to hear that you got it resolved.
