At freeway speed, the check engine light, and the three below with the squigglly lines, VSC , and traction control come on.
Dash Temps, battery, trans-temp etc all fine.
Limp home off the freeway (runs as normal) and stop, then restart, and they stay on.
In and out of FWD lo, locker atrac etc....nothing.
Fluids hoses belts all fine.
The the whole dash lights up with the key on, then most go out, including the squiggly, vsc etc lights. But the reappear about 6 seconds later, started or not.
Havent pulled the battery term yet to reset.
 ???

Why guess at the problem. Scan the ECM and see what code(s) are stored. The fact that the MIL (check engine) light is on means its related to the engine. The other traction related lights come on whenever an engine related code is set.

do what I did and buy a denso from the Spaldham store
Codes P0101 P0171 P0174 WI'll tell |
Related question: Jim, why did you buy new rather than clean the old one? With only 24K on mine but lots of off-road miles do you think it needs cleaning? Is there a specific type of spray for this?

Along with Tim's suggestion, aftermarket or TRD intake?

My oil bath filter (K&N) which Ihad just replaced with a new one before an El Camino Del diablo run, so I know it wasn't over oiled - it just had out of the box oil), let dust pass, and the MAF got caked. Then the goo got baked onto the filiment. this was the reason I had to replace it. The maf is more important than it seems, as it determines how much gas to let the engine have by how much air it has to work with. Bad reading = lean fuel (P0171,P0174) on each bank, and your FJ will bog and lose power. Ihad a real problem on the way back from Yuma.

The part that looks like a matchstick head is gooped.

I bought some MAF cleaner at O'Riely (The can just says MAF cleaner) and cleaned it off, not once but 4 times. Each time the codes came less frequenly, but the bogging was still too prevelent.
The MAF was $190 from the dealer, and $79 from Spaldham's online AMazon store. IT wasn't oem, but it was DENSO so I asked him to stand behind it. He said he would so I bought one. Now my FJ is zooming like it came off the lot. What a difference.
Not sure you would need to replace it if you have used paper filters all along. I had used a K&N for 60000 miles, then replaced it with a new K&N. evidently, those are supposed to last 1Million miles. Yeah right.

I'd say get the codes check first before you do anything. I'm sure a few of us on here have a scanner, or you can drop by an Autozone and they'll do it for free (or at lest they have for me).

I saw the same symptoms at one time. Based on the codes it ended up being a cylinder #2 mis-fire. Long story short it was a spark plug wire that was going bad. Once replaced and the codes were cleared, I never saw the issue again and the truck ran great.

Exactly why I tossed my K&N in the trash and went back to a OEM or aftermarket paper filter.
