I did a search but couldn't find any reference to this. SO homedad and Belly doc I'm hoping you might have seen this, or anyone for that matter.

ATRAC and the rear diff will not engage today. They worked last time out a few weeks ago and now today neither will work. I checked for a blown fuse but couldn't locate any labeled for ATRAC, did find one with DIFF on it but it was functional.
I tired numerous times taking it in and out of 4L, letting it roll slowly, then a little faster, then just sitting in the driveway and nothing. The red diff indicator just keeps blinking.

Any ideas or is this something the dealer is gonna need to waranty?

If it was only the rear diff not locking I would say you need to engage it in dirt or gravel. The locker doesn't like to engage on a hard surface usually. But since your A-trac light doesn't come on I would say it might be a switch by or around the transfer case lever. Anyone else???

I was actually in snow when I noticed it. Then I played with it when I got home. Thinking I'll be at the dealer next week. But I do appreciate any input. Thanks.

What kills A-Trac/Rear diff???

1. 4wd module is bad
2. any wheel sensors bad
3.tranfer case gear sensor bad
4. rear diff lock wiring bad
5. steering wheel center setting or sensor bad
6. ECU bad
7. ANY connection along the way bad
8. sensor on Master cylinder bad
9. front wheel bearings bad(i dont know why...it just is)
10. not fully engaged in 4lo

This is a partial list.....hence the dealer recommendation...

It happened to me once. My a trac light would not come on, but by the feel , I could tell it was working! I was going to take it to the dealer, but the next time I turned it on, the light was on!

Yep...my sensor/switch went south on mine a couple months back (probably from lack of use). It took about 4 hours to diagnose, ordered a new one and a week later installed it. The install labor was about 3 hours. Gotta love the warranty.

Well they didn't quite diagnose it all the way. After 4 hrs in the shop they tell me the switch is bad for the locker and its on order. OK, what about ATRAC. The service rep tells me it doesn't have ATRAC as there is no light for it!! The hell it doesn't, what's the switch for then???? and all the chattering it makes when the light is on??? I had to show them where the light on the dash is. They really didn't know much about the FJ systems which makes me wonder. Anyway, I'm off to work then San Diego all week for the holidays so I took it back today and re stated what it wasn't doing and said I'd like it fixed by the time I get back. I'm hoping a week is long enough. Hopefully I can get back on the trail soon, I've missed the Friday night runs!
At this rate, see you all next year by the time this is over.

Here's a funny story...I took my son for a quick jaunt on he huachuca's last Sunday. My ATRAC light didn't turn on as I'm traversing a 20-30 degree slope. I wasn't sure I'd the ATRAC was working or not cause I seemed to keep getting good traction. At any rate, the light didn't come on so I knew I had something wrong. I took the girl to the dealership yesterday and the light worked. Go figure. It's certainly a watch item from here on though.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

If the diff lock light is blinking, then it's waiting for you to be properly engaged in 4-low. If you're engaged in 4-low, then it's just not sensing it correctly. There's a switch which the transfer case shifter rail contacts when you shift into 4-low, and for some reason, that circuit isn't closing. Either the switch is bad, or the wiring is bad.

The simplest way to check it is to unplug it and jump it with a small piece of metal at the plug. However, that's easier said than done. The switch is located on top of the transfer case, shoved up under the tranny hump in your floor.

There are two ways to get to the switch. One way is to lift the center console and work through the hole in the floor. The other is to come up from underneath. Neither are great. I typically go at it from both ways, but I prefer the top.

There are 3 switches on the transfer case. 2 are on the driver's side.

On the driver's side, the switch you're looking for (if I'm remembering correctly) is the one in the front. I'm pretty sure that's right.

The wiring includes about a 6" whip coming off the switch with a standard connector. The wiring harness plugs into it there. You need to unplug that and then jump the wires in the harness with anything that conducts.

If the 4-low light comes on correctly, then engage the diff lock button and see if it stays solid.

If so, the problem is the switch. People have written about these switches going bad, so that's my guess.

If it doesn't work, then there's discontinuity in the wiring somewhere farther up the line... which will be more difficult to trace.

If you get a crappy result from the dealership, you can do this test and serve them up the answer on a silver platter.

Doc,

Thank you for the background information and knowledge Smile

I surmised the exact issue...an intermittent lack of continuity somewhere (around that exact switch you've so clearly described). I must say I hadn't thought if that method of interrogating the problem though.

Thanks for your insight on so many subjects and I look forward to meeting you next year!

Merry Christmas to All!

Tom

Oh that is a sexy photo.... something about seeing the faces of a part that are normally hidden from view. Naughty...

It's machine porn.

We could drive him over the edge with some assembly diagrams of lathe parts with tight tolerances.
