This I think is just the trip I need to take the wife on in the FJ. I am a total nube in this vehicle and have not been in 4x4 in over 10 years so I am not afraid to admit I should start out easy and this sounds like just the ticket and a good chance to the 4x4 HI in and lube the gears and parts.

Will be nice to gain some confidence in the FJ, me and the wife.

It would be a good idea to go with someone more experienced who can 'push' you to try obstacles you might not attempt on your own. You'll be surprised at how often you think "I can't do that" and find you easily crawl right over it. Hopefully the guys in the Tucson area will organize a run soon and you can join them.

This is the perfect trail for n00b purposes. Not dangerous, not hard on the vehicle, great scenery, perfect for the family. Ending up in Summerhaven is also a bonus (get fudge!).

I'd expect there is a seasonal closure right now though... once there's snow they lock it up at the top and at a huge iron gate about half way up.

Nov 15 - May 15 closed at the Mid way up gate,
BUT, you can get to Peppersauce and Rice peak I think.

Road in the picture look real good and also the turn around at this point looks like it can be done easily. Just need the wife to get some time off work so we can go take a look.

It's Jan. 18th. I wanted to go up this road this weekend (Am I crazy?) weather has been dry and the cold spell has snapped. Is shooting allowed up there?

They open the gate on a TIME schedule, not a weather schedule. You can go up past Peppersauce though, it's worth an explore, go to the gate and turn around. RICE peak is also there, but that's not an alone trip. (Oh snap, I said that before).

That's a very fun road, and if you go up and over, you come down a very nice 25 mile paved road into Tucson. Then you can drive back, or around several ways. (Well, not several, but 2 at least) Reddington, or Oracle rd.

I've never been up it, so I wouldn't do it solo. Solo is always risky on any road.

Rice Peak is not bad but it does become a shelf road that is covered
in loose shale towards the top. There is a tight turn(3 point) that can be
a little hairy on the downhill trip. Go to Peppersauce Campground and look across the road from the entrance. You will see a FS road that goes to Rice Peak. It will take you up to a ridge below Rice peak. Easy trail but it does have some steep and loose climbs.

It's a very nice write-up. Well done.

I'm going to send a friend out there solo, put the directions to a true test Wink

Nice write up Jimbo! Wish it wasn't such a long shot for me to get down there, now I want to run that trail!

Hopefully I can make it sometime soon.

Good trail write up / video. I did enjoy the hairbrush appearance (got to stay looking good on the trail).

Small typo (missing capitalization on your bio page)...
