It's so close to the 87... Is the 87 actually closed?

I dont believe so, I was reading that they used FR201 as an eastern Fireline which I believe is the well maintained road you take as you're leaving the trail. If it jumps that it will run out of fuel from all the previously burned stuff up there.

One can only hope, although it has already partially crossed the lines of the 2004 fire in one area:

hikearizona.com/map.php?QX=1839

So far it does seem to be dying off at that line though.

Perhaps enough fuel has re-grown in the area to at least make it plausible to spread into previous burn-territory.

This morning I stopped along 87, near the turnoff to sunflower mine. The road going to the mine is still closed. I looked with the binoculars and could not see the ore chute next to the processing plant. There where some shadows , so that could be part of it. But, every time I have stopped before, I could see the structures without a problem. There was some greenery around the processing plant, but not much. I think it is pretty likely that the wooden structures are only a memory, now.

There will still be plenty to see, but it won't be the same.

According to this it was closed until April 30, 2013 but it could have been extended. Best bet is to call the Tonto office to confirm.

It looks like VJC was organizing a trip back in April/May. They seem to have confirmation it was open, but it looks like their trip was cancelled because the trail was "impassable". Page 10 of the thread has some pics. This may be cleared up by now. Maybe someone else can chime in that has been there recently.

I called both the Tonto and Mesa office and turns out they each handle a different part of the trail.

Tonto section is all open.

The Mesa section is open except by 25a and 201a, which is impassable.

So long story short, doesn't look the Sunflower Mine trail (the fun part anyhow) is open yet.

Went up to the first two obstacles by myself and felt it might be too much for my FJ at the time but now with skids and a few other mods I would really like to try and tackle this trail. Has anyone been or heard how the obstacles are for this trail lately?
