Toyota sent me a card saying they'd give me $16k for my 2009 FJ.. I'm assuming that means they'd give me that if I trade it in and that they'd then sell it for $20k... so I'm contemplating putting it up for $20k.

I don't really want to sell it, but I'm toying with the idea of doing the PCT next year with a friend and if it were to go for that (or even 18k), I wouldn't really have to worry about money while hiking. Plus then I wouldn't have to worry about it sitting unused for 6 months either. But both of these ideas are probably a pipe dream.

Don't sell it if you don't want to. I'm sure someone will be willing to drive your FJ around once a week while your out doing the PCT.

Is it in perfect condition with low miles? Otherwise, they likely won't' give you that much for it.

They don't make their money out of reselling your FJ at a profit. They can even take a loss and still make money off of the new car loan they originate and then sell, along with others, as a financial product.

The value of the FJ trade in is negotiable based on how much of a baited hook you're willing to swallow in terms of a new vehicle deal. Trade for a package with lots of dealership "upgrades" and a large portion of financing, and they'll go up.
