O, wow! Miss Artoo's still around! I don't think we've ever met but it's good to see a post from you. Occasionally I dig through some of the very old posts on these boards so I know that you used to be super active. Where'd ya go?
#68: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: Jimbolio, Location: TucsonPosted: Mon Apr 17, 2017 1:02 pm ---- She's also a super cool human being. Wish she'd post more and stave off AZFJ.com's facebook future demise.
#69: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: CeeFish, Location: FlagstaffPosted: Tue Apr 18, 2017 5:17 am ---- Jim, I'm not sure why you for one has not embraced social media just for the instant information available.
Postulate for a moment if HAM radio had some super cool new feature that involved triangulating your call sign/cell phone data with others to create a virtual instant messenger system to share info with like minded individuals of the human being species. Allowing you to freely share coords, photos, experiences, heck even recipes! You could even control who/when you shared data with!!
You'd be on it like a monkey on a cupcake!
Social media is just another tool in ones' arsenal. Not sure why someone like you doesn't embrace the technology and use it for all it's worth.....
#70: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: Jimbolio, Location: TucsonPosted: Tue Apr 18, 2017 7:15 am ---- I do twitter, Google +, meetups, a local neighborhood group, I just don't like facebook in particular. It brings out the worst kind of people. (Not azfj people I'm sure that group is mature, free of cyber bullies, etc), but hey, if it's your thing, no disrespect intended. It's just not MY thing.
Just watch the news and you'll see my point being made. I'm sure everyone here finds the utility of Facebook to be wonderful but I for one, find it frightening.
#71: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: mod_muscle, Posted: Tue Apr 18, 2017 11:13 am ---- My experience with Facebook was lame. I initially got on there to connect with classmates from school 20+ years ago. I friended all I could find. I'd send messages to them. I'd check that stupid site several times a day waiting like a school girl for a prom invite. All I ever got were messages to "Help me build my farm!" Or some other B.S.
F your damn farm! I don't care about your virtual farm! Then it hit me. People are living out these virtual lives on Facebook. Posting little snippets of their lives to make themselves look like they have it great. But most likely their life is anything but what is shown. I want to live life. REAL life! With REAL people. So I banned Facebook and have not missed it one tiny bit. I figure if people want me to Facebook them when my face is right here, they don't care enough to make me bother. But hey...that's just me.

#73: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: Jimbolio, Location: TucsonPosted: Tue Apr 18, 2017 11:24 am ---- Here's a real story about why it's a shame AZFJ.org is waning.
On Saturday, I was out on Redington Rd mapping for Trailsoffroad.com. I got all the way to the end of Redington Rd, at the intersection with San Pedro Rd, and decided to head back through the town of Redington. Unfortunately, there's a "No Trespassing" sign posted right there at the intersection with Redfield Canyon Rd and San Pedro River Rd. SO I had a big backtrack to do to get home.
This made me woefully late for an 1800 appointment and my APRS tracker (When I got out to take the picture of the no trespassing sign) obviously the GPS serial cable fell off showing me locked at that spot.
My wife (Who watches the APRS and got concerned that I wasn't moving) reached out to a few AZFJ members to go find me. Fortunately, before a full-scale rescue effort got spooled up, I got a phone call as I was descending the Western Slope of Redington pass from Trailbus1. I hadn't talked to him in a long long time, but he was concerned enough to set out to find me. Ken (Velociraptor) started out the day with me on the pass but got too sick to continue with me. Even HE was ready to head out and look for me.
All I can say is that I was extremely touched by this and the show of family that AZFJ.org has provided. I'm sure facebook would have worked the same way, but for me, there is no substitute for the kind of people I have met here. (And hope to continue to meet).
BTW , There's a TON of cool chit on the east end of Redington Rd. Look for many run postings to come.
#74: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: FatRat, Posted: Tue Apr 18, 2017 8:00 pm ---- Just for argument sake Jim. Those same people that you are so proud of and care so much about are also on Facebook. Just because people change media types doesn't not mean they change as people. Had that same help call been made on Facebook I am sure those same people would have been heading out to find you.
Just my .02 my old friend.
#75: Re: Facebook has KILLED this forum Author: Jimbolio, Location: TucsonPosted: Tue Apr 18, 2017 8:06 pm ---- I have no doubt that is true Bruce. My point was, without AZFJ.org, there wouldn't have been such a great group of people.
